History of HMCG Knott-End-on-Sea

Once many years ago there were Coastguards living in cottages known as Spring Bank Cottages. According to local books and word of mouth a Coastguard Cutter was moored off in the river. Its job was to stop smuggling at the two ports of Skipool and Wardleys.

Knott-End Coastguard as it is now was first started when the Hillman Imp from Fleetwood was trying to get across the sands. The Hillman Imp. There was Ramsey Taylor and John Bradbury who became reporting members for Fleetwood Coastguard from 1972 to 1974. Fleetwood was the flank station which carried heavy rocket equipment and other rescue equipment. Knott-End was given a smaller rocket gun with breeches buoy. The breeches buoy is now in the Lancaster Maritime Museum. The other equipment was a pair of binoculars and an old portable radio. The radio was heavy and had to be carried on a persons back. When Fleetwood CG was issued with a Landrover their Hillman Imp was given to Knott-End CG. Ramsey Taylor, John Bradbury and a small team worked from Ramsey's Cafe, which is now owned by Ramsey Taylor's son who was also once a Coastguard. One of the Coastguards managed to get hold of an old beaten up car that they used for beach rescues. One day when they had a mud rescue to do the car overheated and blew up. They had no choice but to get their equipment and carry it to the incident. After the rescue the car was taken off the beach and taken to a scrap yard.

March 6th 1980, Knott-End Coastguard Station was opened. There was also a Landrover at Knott-End. The Landrover had a six foot high aerial so it had to be folded down near bridges. 06 March 1980 first General Purpose boat put on station. Ramsay Taylor became the first Auxiallary-in-charge at H.M. Coastguard Knott-End-on-Sea. The Searider was replaced in 1983 because it was ten years old. Another Avon Searider 4 metre was put on station. Knott-End Coastguard celebrated its 10th birthday in 1984. In March 1985 Ramsey Taylor died after a short illness. His fellow Coastguards carried his coffin to and from the church. Maroons were set off across the river and Coastguards and sailors around marked there respect. His ashes were spread at sea by Knott-End-on-Sea Coastguard Boat. A few months later John Bradbury took over as the new Aux/I/C at Knott-End. In November 1988 the Searider was replaced by a brand new Carson 500. The new boat was first taken out at Knott-End on sea trials on November 20th 1988. After its sea trial it had to have several modifications. After the modifications it served for six years and was even taken to inland floods. The Carson was the fastest boat that had been at Knott-End at that time. The Carson was replaced on Wednesday 15th March 1995 with a Ribcraft 5.85. The boat had a taller A-frame than the Carson so the garage had to be fitted with a winch. The boat couldn't be backed into the garage by the Landrover because the each time the mast head light got smashed off, even when folded down. The boat is now winched bow first into the garage.
